The purpose of the Guidance and Counseling Department is to assist students as they form an adolescent and adult identity. To this end, activities are planned in individual and small group formats at age-appropriate levels. These activities are designed to help students identify individual strengths, talents, areas of personal and career interest, and aspects that may need improvement or academic remediation.
Counselors help their advisees plan and evaluate their academic programs, monitor progress toward graduation, and assemble post-secondary alternatives. The choices students make each year directly affect the life options they have upon graduation. Students ask for advice on personal issues, search through career and scholarship databases, visit with admissions and military representatives, and keep their family members informed of their progress. With careful searching, thoughtful course selections, and honest effort and persistence, students can take pride in their work and plan a future that is bright.
Students are assigned to a specific counselor based upon the student’s last name. Mr. Klebon assists students with last names A-G, Mr. Weller addresses students with last names H-Q, and Dr. Serafin handles students R-Z. Beyond this, each counselor is responsible for special programs such as course selection, financial aid planning, and SAT/ACT test administration.
