Old Business:
According to President H. Robert Mattis, Mildred Sharp has now moved into Serenity Gardens Assistant Living Center.
New Business:
Mr. James Zack - Superintendent, Mr. Chris Venna - Principal of the high school and Mrs. Ruby Marchetti joined the meeting. Mr. Zack approached the alumni requesting the use of the database to send out letters to all alumni members of Shamokin High School asking for donations to help relieve some of the budget deficiencies. This would be an aid in helping take the pressure off programs which could be cut at the elementary and middle school level. These include music, gym and art.
It was stated by Mr.Zack that the raising of taxes would not be very beneficial. It has been proposed that only approximately 67,000 dollars would help the 5 million dollar deficit.
The database would only be used to send out a onetime letter to ask for donations from alumni. There is an alumni association policy in place which limits usage of the databse for alumni associated business. This request is being made by the school district and considered by the alumni association due to the close relations already maintained by these two groups. Mrs. Sheila Pavelko be approached to help with this request for the school.
The first motion for the allowing of the database was for years 1966 to present by Susan Haas, 2nd by Atty. Myron Moskowitz. The motion was then amended to be used for all years prior to the merger.
Additionally - Vice President Maxine Howerter-Harvey asked Mr. Venna and Mr. Zack to contact her when these letters would be ready to allow the association to help fill these envelopes, since they have come to us for help with this proposed plan.
The alumni association also asked to have meetings with the board to keep informed of all actions. President H. Robert Mattis invited both Mr. Venna and Mr. Zack to come to the meetings. Mr. Venna asked to have an invitation card be sent to him to notify him of the upcoming April meeting.
The testing dates for the scholarship awards are March 12-13, 2012. It was communicated at the meeting that the registration for the exam will be announced to the students three weeks to one month prior to the exam, according to Mr Venna.
While having Mr. Zack and Mr. Venna at the meeting, the board asked the status of the Scholarship from the Moyer $25,000 donation. It was reported that the entire check was finally placed into the activity fund account. According to both Mr. Venna and Mr. Zack, two $1,000.00 dollar scholarships were given out to two 2011 students from the account. It was then verified that the scholarships will be given out from this fund to the proper beneficiaries.
Next Meeting will be Wednesday April 18th, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church at 7pm.
Meeting adjourned by motion from Atty Myron Moskowitz, seconded by Irvin Liachowitz.
