Alternative Education 2017-18

  • I have a very small class with just seven students. When I moved into my room, we had plenty of extra school supplies purchased from the teacher before out of her own pocket that had accumulated through the years and the students recognized that. Coincidentally, on Fridays we do current events for a part of class and the students thought it would be neat to donate to a school in Texas that needed it. The class understood that we have exactly what we need and that it would be rewarding to help others in need. The items they collected around the room includes different school supplies such as: Pencils, pens, paper book covers, sharpeners, index cards, clipboards, notebooks, folders, and other useful items.

I asked a couple students "Why should our class donate? Can't someone else?". One student said "...we don't need all the extra stuff so why leave it sit and collect dust when we can help someone...". I continued to ask the students "How does giving to schools in Texas make you feel?". One student said simply "it feels good to do something for someone else". I was impressed and proud of their empathy! I want to thank these students and Mrs. Gitler for their collection and donation!

Halfway through the year, our students also donated many of our class holiday decorations to the Salvation Army.

  • Luckily, several of my students and soccer players have helped to freshen up the classroom by painting the lockers, book shelves and even the floor. What a difference!
